The Department of Environmental Conservation says a third layer was discovered Tuesday underneath two layers of 10 chemicals drums that have already been found at a Bethpage park.

The discovery comes as crews continue digging through the old Northrop Grumman site.

Four chemical drums were removed from the second layer earlier Tuesday.

The DEC is requiring Northrop Grumman to use ground penetrating radar to see what else could possibly be buried at Bethpage Community Park.

The first set of chemical drums was uncovered when Grumman crews were conducting testing of the soil.

In September, the Town of Oyster Bay took Northrop Grumman to court in hopes of addressing the cleanup process at their old site.

A company spokesperson for Northrop Grumman said in a statement, "We are working closely with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and other stakeholders as we continue to conduct our ongoing remediation activities in Bethpage. In response to our recent discovery, Northrop Grumman contractors removed six drums and the concrete, in which the drums were encased, from the ballfield. We are conducting further excavation to access the additional concrete in the excavation area and determine whether there are additional drums encased within. We are conducting work under the direction of NYSDEC and according to NYSDEC-approved health and safety plans. We remain committed to protecting the health and well-being of the community as we address environmental conditions in Bethpage."
