The Bay Shore High School varsity girl's lacrosse team played Monday in honor of a 9-year-old girl who died from an infection while battling leukemia.

The first "Play For Pearl Day" was in celebration of the life of Pearl Heinlein, of Brightwaters, who had just started playing lacrosse.

The entire team wore special "Team Pearl" shirts with the number three on the back. Three was Heinlein's special number.

Her mother and sisters were at the game. Her mother spoke before the game began and the sisters assisted with the coin toss.

"She had just really started getting into the sport - she only got a few practices in before she started going downhill," Pearl's mother, Brie Heinlein said. "But the lacrosse community, I've never seen anything like it, they swooped in with support to this day."

The Bay Shore Marauders have dedicated their entire season to Heinlein. They even have a scoring play named after her.

Shirts with Pearl's number three were also sold at the game. All of the money will be donated to the Pearl Heinlein Foundation.

The foundation's first project will be a playground at Saint Patrick's School where Pearl was a student.
