'You can change your story': Brooklyn organization sends care packages to transgender women of color

A Brooklyn organization is sending out COVID-19 care packages to transgender women of color for Pride Month.
Latravious Collins, a transgender woman herself, started the Brooklyn GHOST Project to help people who are being hurt hardest by violence in their communities.
The Human Rights Campaign has reported that violence and poverty disproportionately impact trans women of color.
"We've actually been through those experiences that people are going through, so I understand when you tell me your pain and your sorrow because it's mine," Collins says.
Collins is partnering with the Brooklyn Community Pride Center to put the care packages together.
Aokilee Terrell was just one person who received her care package. She says it represents that the trans community "all have to be there for one another."
Collins' goal is to provide a support system and to help trans people succeed.
"We have been told too long that we're at the bottom and it's all we deserve," Collins says. "It's not true. It's not your story, you can change your story."
Collins is still accepting donations and says anyone can nominate a trans woman of color to receive the help.
