People in Merrick protested Wednesday demanding justice for Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Protesters read poems and changed at the Merrick train station.
"There are honest cops that are sick of the cover ups," said Pastor Arthur Mackey. "They are honest cops that say 'I didn't sign up for this' and in New York and many other places they'd rather commit suicide then stay in a racist and sexist system."
The protest on the Island comes after a deadly night of protests in Kenosha. Two people were killed and a third person was injured. Police say they've arrested 17-year-old Kyle Rittenhouse on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide.
Officials are calling the shootings a possible vigilante attack during a protest against the shooting of Jacob Blake on Sunday. Blake was shot at least seven times. Blake's family lawyer says it may have been eight times.
Officials say the 29-year-old was shot in the back as he was opening the door to his SUV, where his three children sat in the back seat.
Kenosha police have said little about what happened other than that they were responding to a domestic dispute. They have not said why the officers opened fire or whether Blake was armed.
"He did come out of surgery. He had to have additional hardware placed in his spine. The extent of his spinal cord injury is still somewhat unknown," said Patrick Salvi Jr., Blake family attorney.
