1h agoBrooklyn residents who are celebrating Juneteenth took to the steps of the Brooklyn Public Library in Grand Army Plaza to provide a learning moment about its rich history.
Drummers lined the plaza as members of the commemoration provided information on the history of Juneteenth, paying homage to the moment in 1865 when slaves in Texas learned they were free.
The event, hosted by Councilmember Farrah Louis's office, aims to teach the residents of New York City a lesson about the cultural significance of the holiday.
"Enslaved people went through a lot of terrible situations and we want to make sure everyone is aware of their history," said Louis.
