Brooklyn students, including 200 kids from elementary schools, will compete in the three versus three basketball tournament at the Aviator Sports and Event Center.
The tournament is held by nonprofit New York Edge, a provider of after-school activities that focus on staying active and academics. The four-day tournament will also incorporate time to teach the participating students about healthy habits.
Though Monday was all elementary school students, the next three days will open the court to students through 12th grade.
Dribbling, passes and crossovers were part of the practice for the students, including 10-year-old Lily Kopp.
“My favorite sport is basketball," Lily said. "It’s an amazing sport and I really love it and I’m on a basketball team and it’s really fun."
The students even got help from professional athletes, including former Knicks power forward Larry Johnson.
“My favorite part is just interacting with the youngsters, trying to see what their life is about and also you get four, five youngsters that really want to play basketball, really want to learn the game,” Johnson said. “So they have a thousand questions.”
