The Turn to Tara team is digging deeper into ways you can respond to flash flooding and avoid making some key mistakes.
Here are some ways you can flood-proof your home:
- Prepare: Remove leaves, pine cones, and debris from your downspouts.
- Direct downspouts three to six feet away from your house so that the water doesn't absorb back into the ground and leach into basements or into sidewalls.
- Install splash blocks at your downspout's outlets.
- Underground pipes should direct water away from your home's foundation.
- Clear out trees that could cause debris.
- If you can, invest in flood insurance.
