With many people facing layoffs or furloughs, money may be tight at home.

The six tips below may help cut spending during the coronavirus pandemic:

-Check to see if utility companies will negotiate bills. Call your cellphone, cable, electric, gas and oil companies to see if they can renegotiate rates and fees - especially if you're expecting to be late with the payment.

-Open a high-rate CD with no penalty to withdraw. A no-penalty CD gives you the ability and flexibility to take advantage of rising interest rates.

-Eliminate unnecessary expenses - how many streaming services to you actually use? If you use Netflix daily, but not Hulu, discontinue the service.

-Avoid panic pandemic purchases or excess retail therapy - only buy what you need.

-Make a weekly meal plan. This will avoid food waste, and will help you prepare for meals with the groceries you have.

-Learn to cook, bake, and even make your own coffee. You may have some extra time on your hands, and since social distancing rules are making it harder to go out to eat, or grab your morning cup of joe - learn to make these things at home.
