Despite the dismal unemployment numbers, there are some companies that are hiring. And many of them based in the Hudson Valley.
The state Department of Labor’s website is a resource to find out what companies are hiring.
It included the following: Tarrytown-based Regeneron Pharmaceuticals has 378 openings, Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla has 254 openings, Purchase-based PepsiCo has 245 openings and Northwell Health has 231 job openings.
Overwhelmed by the unprecedented number of people applying for unemployment, the state Department of Labor is also hiring.
The business-oriented social media platform LinkedIn is another resource in any job hunt.
It now has a “Who’s hiring?” blog. Right now, Walmart is looking for 150,000 new workers for its distribution and fulfillment centers. CVS Health is hiring 50,000 new employees and Lowe's Hardware is looking for 30,000 new employees.
Larchmont-based career counselor Nancy Leighton says checking online postings is great, but job-seekers should also leverage their network.
“If you're focused, if you know what skillset you have to offer, what industries they apply to, you can reach out to your network in a really focused way and find that hidden job market, because it's there,” she says.
In the past month, more than 17 million Americans have lost their jobs.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 6.6 Americans filed for jobless claims last week.
