The city is on pause, and now Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered spring break to also be paused.

New York City schools were scheduled to have spring break from Thursday, April 9 through April 17. School has already been closed with students and staff doing remote learning.

The governor is ordering that the learning and teaching continue even during what should have been spring break

A spokesperson for the Department of Education says,“after the governor's March 27, 2020 executive order extending school closures across the state until April 15, the state education department communicated that districts continue to provide remote instruction between April 1 and April 14, even if the district is scheduled to be on spring break. We are reviewing how this affects New York City.”
A petition emerged on social media calling for spring break to be maintained. Garnering more than 16,000 votes in less than 24 hours, the petition states that the teachers have been working harder than ever because of remote learning. It also says that parents also need a break because many are working from home or have even been laid off because they’re considered “non-essential.”

Meanwhile, the president of the United Federation of Teachers sent out a letter to teachers expressing his gratitude for their hard work. He says students and staff will be off from Thursday, April 9 to Sunday, April 12 for the holidays, but will be back to working on April 13. He says he understands it doesn’t feel fair, because this isn’t fair for anyone, the nurses and doctors and the families losing loved ones.

He also says there will be a telephone town hall today for UFT members.
