The family of a Peekskill teen killed last weekend spoke exclusively with News 12 about their loss.
Omarion McKenzie's family say he was a shining star and source of endless joy.
"He was my baby. He was special and he loved us, " said his aunt, who spoke to News 12 by phone.
The 17-year-old's life was cut short on Friday. His family alleges another teen he knew from school, 18-year-old Jahliv Niles, fatally stabbed McKenzie in the chest as he left the corner store, less than a block away from his house.
His aunt tells News 12 that she never had the chance to say goodbye.
"I never got to tell you I love you. I never got to hear your voice. How much you mean to me," she says.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, which has set up a memorial outside of his home.
Peekskill Mayor Andre Rainey knew McKenzie since he was a kid.
"His death wasn't just a loss to the family, but it has impacted everyone in the community literally because we all knew him," said Rainey.
McKenzie played lacrosse for the Peekskill Red Devils and was just accepted to play for Tompkins-Cortland Community College upstate.
His family is planning a remembrance ceremony for the summer to celebrate his life - when it should have been his graduation.
Jahliv Niles, 18, has been charged in the teen's death and is being held in Westchester County Jail without bail.
