Volunteers from a Yonkers-based nonprofit are stepping up to bring desperately needed protective equipment to hospitals and living facilities.
Afya Foundation sorted through supplies in Yonkers Monday. The organization is among the first to send medical supplies to disaster zones.
"This is the first time in unbelievable volume that we have to invert that model and turn it back on those that helped us," says Danielle Butin, founder of Afya Foundation.
Dr. Steve Kelly is one of dozens of medical professionals donating his time at Afya to ensure personal protective equipment makes it to New York City region doctors and nurses.

"I want to protect my colleagues because my colleagues now are taking incredible risks and they really shouldn't have to," says Kelly. "So every time one of us sorts a glove, sorts a mask, we are saving somebody's life."
The organization has also received 'my hero boxes' from people all across the area. Butin says people are donating face masks, sanitizing wipes and some even made masks.
Afya is in need of volunteers to help sort out supplies and financial donations to buy more equipment.
