Officials are calling North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset a "hot spot" for coronavirus patients as health care systems try to deal with the surge.
A Northwell Health official tells News 12 that the number of COVID-19 patients at their hospitals, including ones in Long Island, Westchester and New York City, has increased tenfold.
Northwell Health hospitals currently have 1,600 patients who tested positive for coronavirus. An additional 2,000 patients are waiting to be tested or are waiting for results.
Officials say Northwell Health is looking to increase its capacity by more than 60% across all hospitals. They say the system is seeking more beds, staff and equipment.
Nassau County Executive Laura Curran says most hospitals in the county are connected to larger networks, so they are able to increase beds and staff.
Northwell Health officials say they'll search around the hospital to find space for the beds, whether that'd be a conference room or a cafeteria.
All elective surgeries have also been canceled, which means surgery rooms could also be used.
Officials say they are looking for anyone with credentials in the health system to become staff at the hospitals.
Northwell Health officials say they have more personal protective equipment than they had during the week, and that they have enough ventilators for now.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says that the state does not have enough ventilators, and that they are vital for those suffering from the virus.
They say they are still searching for more PPE and ventilators.
A floating Navy hospital ship will also be headed to New York to take on coronavirus patients.
