A former Brooklyn high school teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student has been convicted.
The district attorney says the assaults happened in 2017, at least three times inside Erasmus Hall High School and several more times at the teacher’s apartment in East Flatbush.
News 12 is told Mervyn Affoon was a business teacher at Erasmus Hall High School. The victim was 16 at the time. Affoon now convicted of five counts of criminal sexual act in the third degree, three counts of forcible touching and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
Investigators say he groped a 16-year-old student in February of 2017 at least once in a classroom and twice in an elevator. News 12 is also told the two also met at Affoon’s apartment numerous times.
District Attorney Eric Gonzalez says in a statement, “this defendant exploited his position as an educator to sexually assault on multiple occasions a student he was entrusted to teach and protect. I am committed to ensuring that our schools are safe and supportive communities. I hope today’s verdict provides some measure of closure for the victim and his family.”
He is scheduled to be sentenced on May 26 and faces up to 20 years in prison.
