Residents say there is a transportation issue for those living on the western side of Coney Island, where some are about a mile away from the nearest subway.

Elected officials say placing a ferry landing to operate NYC Ferry out of Coney Island Creek would drop a 1 ½ hour commute to under 40 minutes.

At a public hearing, representatives from the New York City Economic Development Corporation and those involved in the ferry project had a chance to listen to input from residents. Many have mixed opinions, either about the location or about the environmental impact of the project on Coney Island Creek - a highly polluted waterway.

A spokesperson from the EDC says the project will undergo environmental review, and there will be minimal drudging of the toxic sediments on the bottom.

The last public hearing will be held Thursday in Manhattan.
