City Island residents are fighting to stop noise from the NYPD’s shooting range that they say disturbs their peace day after day.
Residents say they have dealt with the sound of gunshots for years.
The NYPD says it is working on a temporary solution by using sound abatement curtains that it says should tentatively be up by June of next year.
John Doyle, who represents the 45th Precinct Community Council, says there are things that can be done immediately.
"As far as the AV system, things that can be done with respect to proper schedule when shooting is at its most frequent we can notify people, better scheduling around holidays,” says Doyle.
He says that is until work begins on the construction on the $275 million indoor firing range.
NYPD representatives say there is the potential additional funding that will be needed for that indoor range and that budgets could be a problem.
A spokesperson for the NYPD told News 12 in a statement, “While we proceed through the design and construction of the full range, we are actively pursuing temporary solutions to reduce noise impacts from the range."
Police say construction on the indoor range is expected to begin in 2022 and could take anywhere from three to five years.
