The MTA has equipped cameras along the B46 bus route and those who are caught parking in bus lanes can receive penalties for doing so.
The B46 select bus route, which runs from Williamsburg all the way down to Kings Plaza, will be equipped with cameras starting on Thursday. Any drivers caught parking in a lane starting Thursday will get a warning. After 60 days, drivers can face fines.
The first offense is $50, going up to $250 if there are five offenses within a 12-month period.
There are currently forward-facing cameras on three bus routes. Officials state that so far there has been 10,000 warnings and violations since starting the bus-mounted camera program. The MTA will also campaign through posters, which will be posted on the back of buses that have the camera system.
The MTA told News 12 that the busiest bus route in Brooklyn carries 35,0000 passengers every day. The agency expects more riders once cameras are mounted on each select bus.
The MTA says the cameras have helped buses improve speed and make more timely stops. The agency’s capital plan for the next four years includes $85 million to expand this program to other routes across New York City.
