Vassar College will purchase only energy generated by renewable sources thanks to a new contract with EDF energy, says the school's director of sustainability.
The contract takes effect in July 2021. But even now, any power on campus comes from a solar panel or another renewable source in the area, according to Director of Sustainability Micah Kenfield.
The campus will use solar, wind and even hydro power as it works toward a goal of achieving carbon neutrality no later than 2030.
Just off campus, the Town of Poughkeepsie is one of nearly 300 governments statewide committing to become a "Climate Smart Community" by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
At a state level, since the passing of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, New York is looking to become a "net zero" economy by 2050.
