5-year-old in critical condition following house fire in Bridgeport

Posted: Updated:

A 5-year-old Bridgeport boy is fighting for his life after a fire tore through his home.

The multifamily house in the 700 block of William Street is now vacant and boarded up following Saturday's fire.

Authorities say it happened around 1 p.m. and left several people displaced. The fire began in a kitchen on the second floor and then quickly spread to the third floor.

Officials say there were no smoke alarms in the apartment.

A woman and her son lived in the home, and both are hospitalized following the fire.

Fire officials say the mother has been upgraded to stable condition, but the 5-year-old child remains in intensive care at Yale New Haven Hospital.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
