A Bronx couple has been arrested after police say the pair went “mailbox phishing” in Atlantic Beach.
Authorities say Yoli Osoria and Andrea Gomez were caught by a Nassau police officer on patrol Christmas morning stealing mail from outdoor mailboxes at a local post office in Atlantic Beach to get valuables like cash or checks.
Osoria was allegedly found dangling a glue-coated bottle in the mailbox to get items to stick to it when the officer on routine rounds noticed him with both hands inside the mailbox.
“Fortunately, this police officer was in the right place at the right time and was able to prevent further loss,” says Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas.
Police say the couple was caught with over $3,500 and a $2,800 check.
They were charged with 36 counts of criminal possession of a forged instrument and criminal possession of stolen property.
Singas recommends not mailing out items like gift cards, cash and checks. She recommends using the mailboxes inside the post office.
If convicted, the couple could face up to 15 years in prison.
