Times Square Hero’ latest Democrat to join race for Rep. Lowey’s seat

A Hudson Valley man known as the "Times Square Hero" is the latest Democrat to join the race for the 17th Congressional District seat.

Buchanan Village Trustee Duane Jackson got the moniker nearly 10 years ago when he was working as a street vendor in Times Square.

Jackson said he noticed a suspicious looking car and thwarted a possible terrorist attack.

"I walked over to the car and it was running. There was no driver in it and the car had black lacquer paint on the back window. So you couldn't see into it," he says.

Jackson alerted police, and police found that the car was packed with explosives.
He was hailed a hero for his quick thinking, and even got a call from President Barack Obama.

The Vietnam veteran is using the notoriety he got from that incident, and what he says is decades of relevant life experiences, to throw his hat in the ring for the 17th District seat being vacated by retiring Rep. Nita Lowey.

Jackson spoke to News 12 by phone as he is on the campaign trail to raise funds.

"What I bring to the table is, I was a city planner for 15 years, I have a planning background, Board of Education in New York City. I was a substitute teacher in Maryland,” he says.

Jackson says his campaign will focus on issues facing veterans, as well as affordable housing and senior rights.

The field of candidates to replace Lowey keeps getting more crowded by the day, but Jackson says he likes his chances.

This isn't Jackson's first time running for Congress. Back in 2012, he ran for New York. Back in 2012, he ran for New York's 19th Congressional District seat. Republican Chris Gibson won that race.
