Sacred Heart University brings home National Cheer Championship title for first time

One local cheerleading team brought home the national championship.

The Sacred Heart University cheerleading team won the 2020 All Girls Division I National Championship in Florida this weekend.

They won the National Championship at the Universal Cheerleaders Association finals in Orlando.

SHU has two cheerleading teams, one that competes in national championships and one that competes on game days.

The national team arrived back to their school Monday morning and the game day team was there to congratulate them.

Head Coach CJ Sereno was on the team for four years when she went to SHU and now she's on the other side of the mat coaching. "I don't even think proud is a word that describes how ecstatic we're feeling right now. It's just unreal," says Sereno.

This is the first time Sacred Heart University brought home the national title in cheerleading history.
