Democratic leaders say they have enough votes to pass trucks-only tolls in CT

State Democratic lawmakers met in private Tuesday evening to see if they have enough votes to pass a plan to toll tractor-trailers on a dozen bridges across the state.
Protesters on both sides of the issue greeted senators at the state Capitol Tuesday. All day, they've huddled in private to see if they have the 18 votes needed to pass the proposal.
Truckers would pay $6.40 per bridge in Fairfield County with an in-state discount.
State House Speaker Joe Aresimowicz said he's confident the votes are there.
"I feel very comfortable that we're in a good position. Again, a few things left to be negotiated,” he told News 12.
After 6 p.m., state Sens. Bob Duff and Martin M. Looney said that they have 18 conditional “yes” commitments on trucks-only tolls. A special-session date has not yet been set, but Aresimowicz says it could probably happen “mid-to-late January.”
Republicans have their own "no tolls" plan. It borrows heavily from the state's rainy day fund. But Democrats say there is no support for it.
