A suspended Newark police lieutenant has been indicted on murder and other counts in the slaying of his estranged wife and the wounding of her boyfriend.
A Morris County grand jury handed up the indictment Monday against Lt. John Formisano. It charges the 24-year veteran of the Newark police department with murder, attempted murder, official misconduct, child endangerment, hindering apprehension and weapons offenses.
The shooting happened at a home on Mirror Place in Jefferson Township on July 14. Police arrived to find Christine Formisano dead on the front steps. A man was found inside the home, shot several times, but he survived.
The Formisanos’ children were inside at the time of the shooting, but weren't hurt.
Formisano was arrested in a parking lot in Livingston hours after the shooting. He has pleaded not guilty and is being held at a psychiatric facility.
