Riverdale nursing home fined after removing trees on property

Schervier Nursing Care Center recently received two fines from the Department of Buildings and NYC Planning after removing trees on its property.
The property owner now has to restore the natural features of the area to the satisfaction of the City Planning Commission. The restoration project may include planting new trees.
The Special Natural Area District, also known as SNAD, was created in 1975 for the Riverdale, Spuyten Duyvil and Fieldston areas to preserve the natural features there and balance the preservation with development of natural features within the community.
The Department of Buildings and City Planning both checked out the site after they received complaints from Riverdale residents who felt removing trees at the nursing home was not right. The Department of Buildings then issued a violation.
The violation is still in its early stages, but City Planning officials say the property owner is cooperative.
