Man accused of Manorville road rage stabbing arraigned in court

The man accused of stabbing another man in a Thanksgiving road rage incident in Manorville was arraigned in court on a charge of felony assault Saturday, but his attorney says it was self-defense.
Police say 43-year-old Gregory Spina, of Glen Cove, was driving erratically on Wading River Road in Manorville around 2:30 p.m. on Thursday when he tried to pass a 2017 Hyundai.
Police say the driver of that vehicle thought he had been hit by Spina's car and pulled over to look at the damage.
That's when detectives say that a fight broke out. Spina allegedly stabbed the other driver, a 44-year-old Manorville man, once in the abdomen.
The victim was rushed to the hospital with injuries that were serious but not life-threatening.
Police say they were able to quickly track Spina down because multiple witnesses came forward a description and his license plate number.
"We had 911 reports just prior to the incident of a vehicle driving in an aggressive manner down Wading River Road in the northbound lane passing cars, driving into oncoming traffic," says Detective Sgt. John O'Sullivan, with the Suffolk Police Department.
However, the suspect’s defense attorney says police have the story backwards. He claims his client was being attacked and trying to defend himself.
“My client should not be the one here today. He was attacked by two other individuals. And after being ganged up on by two other individuals who are twice his size, he did what he could do to get away. Now he's being punished for defending himself,” says attorney Luigi Belcastro.

Spina’s bond was set at $5,000 and he is due back in court on Dec. 5.
