East Flatbush resident expresses safety concerns about street near schools

East Flatbush resident Gilbert Sambolin is expressing his concerns in writing about the street between Ditmas Avenue and Clarendon Road and how it affects students trying to safely get to class every weekday morning and afternoon.
The two buildings on the street house multiple schools, including Ivy Hill Preparatory Charter School, Birch Academy, Nazareth Regional High School, P.S. 235 Annex and P.S. 135 Annex.
Gilbert Sambolin says it is a tremendous difficulty to drop his grandson off at Birch Academy every morning.
His frustration prompted him to create a proposal letter to change the street into a one way going from Clarendon Road to Avenue D.
Since then, the proposal letter has been signed by principals from the Catholic and Charter Schools. P.S. 235 Annex and P.S. 135 Annex are state-funded public schools and school officials would need approval from the Department of Education before signing the proposal letter.
Department of Transportation officials say they are waiting on a proposal from the community board to look into their concerns.
Sambolin plans to go before Community Board 17 with his proposal on Nov. 20 in hopes of gathering more community support.
