Kupchick beats incumbent First Selectman Tetreau amid illegal dumping scandal

Posted: Updated:

Fairfield has a new first selectman following an illegal dumping scandal that overshadowed the election.

Republican Brenda Kupchick beat incumbent Democrat Mike Tetreau for first selectman in Fairfield.

Kupchick says she wants to be called the first selectwoman, as she is only the second woman to hold the position in Fairfield's 380-year history.

"A lot of women traditionally don't serve in roles held by men and I want young girls to look up to me and know they could also lead communities and be leaders, just like men are," Kupchick said.

Tetreau thanked his supporters for everything they had done in his campaign during a "very tumultuous past few months."

Tetreau was first selectman for the last eight years and was hoping for a third term. He said there wasn't a single day he didn't enjoy being in office.

"I look forward to working with her over the next few months, the next few years, to ensure Fairfield remains a growing and vibrant town," he said. "I hope we can put this election behind us and come together in the best interest of our community."

The illegal dumping scandal was likely a big part in the outcome of the race. The scandal led to the arrests of two public works employees and a construction company owner.
