Republican Donald Clavin Jr. declares victory in Hempstead supervisor race

It’s down to the wire in the race for Hempstead town supervisor, but Republican Donald Clavin Jr. holds a slight edge over incumbent Democrat Laura Gillen.
With 99% reporting, Clavin had 73,061 votes to Gillen’s 71,494.
Clavin, the longtime town receiver of taxes, declared victory in the race. Gillen did not concede and will wait for absentee ballots to be tabulated.
In 2017, Republican in-fighting sunk the campaign of incumbent Town Supervisor Tony Santino. This year, the GOP united behind Clavin.
“This is a win for the entire GOP in Nassau County,” Clavin said.
