Turning away parents and demanding change, teachers at a preschool in Williamsburg are on strike.
Teachers at Smarter Toddle Preschool in Williamsburg tell News 12 enough is enough as they say they are overworked, underpaid and went on strike Wesnesday.
According to the school’s website, they have two locations, one in Brooklyn and the other in Manhattan.
This morning they were turning away parents and children. The teachers at the school say they are overworked, underpaid and actually earn lower wages than what they were promised when they were hired. They also say they're on a three-week pay period.
They say they've tried to speak with the owners about the conditions, but their concerns have been brushed off.
News 12 spoke to the school's director, who is siding with the instructors, she reached out to both owners to tell them what was going on and that we were here. One didn't answer the phone, and the other refused to speak to News 12.
"The teachers are fed up and they're tired and they want resolution," says Sheila Hall, educational director.
They've also been asking the parents to sign a petition.
The big thing, these teachers say, is that they want communication and compromise and are hoping their actions will lead to that.
