Tuesday marked World Math Day – a day celebrating all things with numbers.
But don’t expect to see too much celebrating in the Garden State. A new survey by the tech company Brainly finds that New Jersey ranks No. 2 in states that do not like math.
But educators say that math is something that should be revered, not hated on.
“People shouldn’t be afraid of math,” says mathematics professor Jennifer Applebee.
The idea of loving math led to the creation of the National Museum of Mathematics – a Manhattan-based museum created by Roselle native Glen Whitney.
Whitney says that there’s more to math than “just numbers and equations.”
"Play is really the essence of mathematics,” Whitney says.
The museum features exhibits, galleries and programs that help children and adults alike learn more about math and its applications.
“Things you can touch and see and interact with,” he says.
Applebee says that math provides “a level of order and understating of the world around us.”
The state that hates math the most is Tennessee, according to the Brainly survey.
