A New Jersey man is facing charges in connection to a car crash that injured 13 people in Stratford back in July, police say.

Jesse Garcia-Mercado, 25, of Jersey City, New Jersey, turned himself into the Stratford Police Department Monday as the result of a warrant for his involvement in the serious crash on the River Road that happened on July 20.

He faces multiple charges including, assault, driving recklessly and risk of injury to a minor.

Police say Garcia–Mercado drove recklessly and caused the two-car crash.

At least 13 people were hospitalized following the crash. Three of the victims were trapped. It took firefighters a half hour to pull them out. One of the victims shattered both of his legs, and a 12-year-old girl was pinned in the vehicle.

Officials say two minivans traveling in opposite directions collided head-on after one of the vehicles crossed the center line.

Garcia-Mercado was held on a $100,000 court issued bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 18.
