News 12 spoke with the United Bodegas of America Friday to get their reaction to a Bronx bodega owner who successfully hid a teen who was stabbed inside his store.
The bodega employee said a fight broke out around 9 :30 a.m. between Baker and Olinville avenues.
Surveillance video shows a teenager who was stabbed running toward the bodega and asking the employee for a knife. The bodega employee said he declined but offered to hide him in the bathroom and secured the area with a mop and bucket.
"We want to make sure that that bodega owner is able to provide as much help as they can to save a life," says Radhames Rodriguez, president of the United Bodegas of America.
After the slaying of Lesandro ‘Junior’ Guzman-Feliz, the group initiated safety measures to be placed in safe haven bodegas throughout the city.
"if anybody has any issue, any problem, we have to be there to protect them," says Rodriguez.
The technology includes multiple security cameras, a panic button to alert police of an emergency, a button that automatically locks the door, emergency lighting and safety glass throughout the store.
In all, the measures can cost about $4,000.
Only six bodegas in the Bronx have the systems in place.
