Hiring a moving company isn't always as simple as it seems.
Customers say moving companies they used have packed up their possessions and then held them hostage and demanded more money.
Many people were able to get their items back, but not everyone is that lucky.
Experts say people who are looking to use a moving company should always do their research. They say consumers should check the company's complaint history with the state Department of Consumer Affairs and groups like the Better Business Bureau.
It is also important to check out the company online or in person and ensure that the mover is licensed for both in-state and out-of-state moves.
Melissa Companick, of the Better Business Bureau, says that customers should always get their estimates in writing.
"Any mover that's going to move you should come to your home, your apartment, wherever it is, they should do a physical inventory of your goods and then give you a written estimate," she says.
Companick also says if the mover wants to exceed the amount, it also needs to be in writing.
