Back to School: Starting class at later time

Adjusting school start times to let students get more sleep so they are sharper has been a hot topic in New Canaan.
School system officials say any changes could be a challenge for buses on the town’s 120 miles of roadway.
Superintendent of New Canaan Public Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi says a group of parents reached out to him about starting school later.
Luizzi says surveys have been done and the consensus was to start all three elementary schools at the same time at 7:45 a.m.
The high school start time would move to 8:20 a.m., and middle school to 9:05 a.m.
Greenwich public schools adopted later start times two years ago after studies showed a later start time allowed kids to get more needed sleep.

Saxe Middle School teacher Vivian Birdsall, who is also the president of the New Canaan teachers union, says we need to do what's best for the kids but is unsure if the kids would actually get more sleep.
School system officials in New Canaan say they will take another look at the idea in October.
