‘Doc’ Gooden accused of DWI, driving wrong way up 1-way street
Former New York Mets legend Dwight “Doc” Gooden has been accused of driving the wrong way up a one-way street while drunk Monday night in Newark.
Police say that officers patrolling the area of Ferry and Vincent streets pulled Gooden’s 2012 black Chrysler over around 11:10 p.m.
Police say that Gooden was evaluated and arrested for driving while intoxicated.
Gooden was previously arrested on June 7 in Holden and accused of having cocaine and driving under the influence.
Gooden has been known to struggle with addiction.
“It’s sad to see the continued problems of this former Mets star but it’s an example of the persistent scourge of drugs and alcohol in this country and the stranglehold they have on addicts,” Newark Public Safety Director Anthony Ambrose said in a statement.
Gooden pitched for the New York Mets and New York Yankees. He assisted the Mets in winning the 1986 World Series. He pitched a no-hitter with the Yankees in 1996.
