Summer has started for more than 1 million students in the New York City Public Schools system.
Wednesday marked the last day of the 2018-2019 school year for the largest school system in the world.
Chancellor Carranza kicked off the day by greeting bus drivers at the Consolidated Bus Yard in Canarsie, Brooklyn.
The chancellor marked the start of this past school year by stopping by a bus depot and says he felt this was good way to end as well.
"In many cases this is the first adult that kids see in the morning associated with school. So, I wanted to end the school year at a bus yard as well, and just cap the school year by really thanking our bus drivers. They do an incredible job of getting our kids to school safely," says Chancellor Carranza.
Depsite the excitement of summer vacation, some considered the last day of school bittersweet.
"We are excited but we're also sad. Some of our students are leaving this year, but we had a great year," says Yonancys DeJesus, a teacher's aid at P.S. 114.
