Woodlawn businesses targeted by team of counterfeiters

Businesses in Woodlawn say their shops were targeted by a team of counterfeiters.
Police say four people allegedly scammed The Kitchen on Katonah Avenue out of $240.
Kitchen owner Jackie McDonnell says she was duped last Friday by four separate individuals who came into her business minutes apart.
She says two of them handed her a $20 to pay for their orders. McDonnell says the other two scammers passed two phony $100 bills for their food purchase.
She believes all four were working together.

“They all asked for the menu and then decided to get something very small,” she says.

McDonnell says the suspects came during the dinner rush and handed the fake money to a new cashier. McDonnell says she also got one of the bogus bills.

“I went to wash my hands, and when I came back and picked up one of the notes, they ran. It was that bad of a fake,” she says.

The kitchen was not the only business the alleged counterfeiters hit. Store owners say they made their rounds to several shops, including a pizzeria.

The NYPD says it is actively investigating the case and is reviewing surveillance video of the four people caught on camera passing the counterfeit cash.
