Rep. Jim Himes (D-4th District) called Monday for the House of Representatives to open an impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, joining others in his party.
Himes made the call in remarks before Congress. He said he's calling for an inquiry "because there are moments for careful calculation, for weighing political expediency and conflicting interests -- and there are moments for clarity and conviction. This is that moment."
"In recent weeks, he has refused to comply with subpoenas, he has ordered administration officials to refuse to testify, and he has asserted executive privilege of unprecedented scope with respect to attempts to alter the census," Himes said of the president in his remarks.
It comes amid a divide between Democrats over how much of their message should revolve around the president as the 2020 campaign starts to ramp up. Himes joins other Democrats calling for impeachment, but they remain in the minority of their party -- and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi does not support the move.
Not all Connecticut Democrats agree with Himes on impeachment. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-3rd District) says she does not support it, believing instead that Democrats need to focus their message on issues such as health care, child care and housing. But Rep. Joe Courtney (D-2nd District) says he respects Congressman Himes’ position, but that he still supports the House committees’ pursuit of information regarding concerns raised in the Mueller report, and that he is committed to acting on whatever steps the fact-finding of the House committees points to next.
