Union: Convicted ‘Junior’ killer assaults correction officer in NYC

Posted: Updated:
THE BRONX -

Jose Muniz, one of the five men convicted of first-degree murder in the “Junior” trial, dislocated a correction officer’s shoulder Tuesday at the Manhattan Detention Complex, according to the Correction Officers' Benevolent Association.

Elias Husamudeen, the president of COBA, says Muniz punched a correction officer in the face, dislocated his shoulder and fractured his back during an unprovoked attack.

He says the officer was trying to provide services to the inmates at the time of the attack.

Husamudeen said it was the second attack on a correction officer in 24 hours. He said that a convicted rapist nearly choked a female officer to death with his T-shirt Wednesday morning at Rikers Island. He’s now facing an attempted murder charge.

A Department of Correction Officers spokesperson said, “Our officers are brave public servants who make our jails safer. These attacks are deplorable, and we take assaults on our officers very seriously. We are pursuing the re-arrest of those responsible."

Husamudeen says these are two examples of why lawmakers should be voting against ending long-term solitary confinement for inmates – a bill that he says is currently on the table.

Assistant Bronx District Attorney Morgan Dolan had said in the trial that Muniz could be seen on surveillance video holding Lesandro Guzman-Feliz down outside a Belmont bodega last summer to give other gang members a chance to stab the 15-year-old. Muniz is scheduled to be sentenced in Junior’s death on July 16.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story reported that the alleged Muniz attack happened at Rikers Island. It has been amended to show the alleged incident occurred at the Manhattan Detention Complex.
