Southport hosts 24th annual Blessing of the Fleet

The Blessing of the Fleet was held in Southport Saturday to wish sailors a safe journey.
The event started off with a parade that began at the Southport Congregational Church and featured classic cars, bands, horses, politicians and other groups.
The Blessing of the Fleet is held at the historic lower wharf. Organizers say more than 1,000 people came to the event.
Clergy men and women wished boaters a safe journey along the Long Island Sound.
"It's a beautiful acknowledgement of the outdoors, the water, the land, and the people and first responders," said Tim Russell, chair of the parade.
Residents say the event is the best way to kick off summer. The event is in its 24th year.
