SPCA: 76 cats rescued from uninhabitable Mastic Beach home; man charged

The Suffolk County SPCA says 76 cats, including five kittens, were rescued from deplorable conditions inside a Mastic Beach home.
Barry Powers, 58, is accused of failing to provide proper sustenance to the cats inside his Jefferson Drive home. News 12 is told that the home was in such bad shape that it has been deemed uninhabitable by the Town of Brookhaven.
SPCA Capt. Paul Llobell says the home's conditions were unsuitable for Powers, his neighbors and all the animals. He says neighbor complaints led to them taking action.
Powers faces an animal cruelty charge and is due in court in July 22.
The SPCA says the recovered cats and kittens were taken to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter. Medical care would be provided for those that need it.
