Brick woman charged with bias intimidation for Facebook messages

A Brick Township woman is facing bias intimidation charges for messages she allegedly sent through Facebook Messenger.
The Ocean County prosecutor says that 48-year-old Denise Scaltrito sent threatening and offensive messages to a victim, which included the “KKK is alive and well in Brick,” references to the Aryan Brotherhood and “derogatory comments regarding the victim’s race.” Officials also say that Scaltrito suggested that the victim move out of town.
Prosecutor Bradley Billhimer says that bias intimidation behavior is on the rise, especially on social media.
“Individuals that exploit hatred, intolerance and prejudice with a purpose to intimidate will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” the prosecutor said in a statement.
Scaltrito was charged with harassment and bias intimidation. She was released on a summons ahead of a future court date.
