For the first time, a woman is in charge of the oldest Presbyterian church in the country.
The First Presbyterian Church in Southampton has had a male minister at the helm for the past 379 years. After an intensive, two-year search that included both male and female candidates, a committee comprised of parishioners decided the Rev. Sarah Bigwood was the right fit.
Bigwood is an associate pastor from a church in Minnesota, a busy mother with two teenagers and worked as a computer programmer before her religious work.
Bigwood says with God's grace, she'll prove to be the right person for the job with a sense of humor and ability to juggle.
Being from Minnesota, Bigwood says she's looking forward to the comparatively mild winters on Long Island.
She'll be preaching from the pulpit this Sunday.
