The New York City Department of Transportation is trying to make crossing the Grand Concourse safer for pedestrians.

The department says it’s going to be building six median extensions along the Grand Concourse.  The Vision Zero program says it is specifically focusing on the blocks between East 140 and East 150 streets.

The DOT says it will also upgrade existing pedestrian ramps on all corners, and install new traffic signal poles.

The Grand Concourse is a "Vision Zero priority corridor" in part because there were four fatalities there between 2010 and 2017, according to the DOT.

Construction is set to begin this spring.
