After a nearly two-year wait, Mets legend Ed Kranepool is finally getting a kidney.

The former first baseman and 1969 World Series champion is a diabetic with two failing kidneys and is in need of a transplant.

The 74-year-old announced he has found a match.

"I'm hoping to meet the donor, because you want to look at him face to face and thank him," says Kranepool. "I've gotten phone calls from people who've had the surgery and they tell me that the day after the surgery you're going to feel great."

The transplant is scheduled for May 7 at Stony Brook University Hospital. Kranepool says his doctors told him he should make a full recovery and will be able to participate in the 50-year reunion ceremony for the 1969 Mets in June.

New York is last in the country in terms of the number of people willing to donate their organs. Only about one-third of eligible New Yorkers have joined the state's organ donor registry. The national average is 58%.
