Volunteers put their hands together Wednesday to give a Freeport park a spring spruce-up.
National Grid volunteers turned out to Freeport Recreational Center, which has been battered by numerous storms, including Superstorm Sandy. During the recovery from Sandy, National Grid workers set up a command center to help residents get their gas service up and running again.
Volunteers worked throughout the day starting at 8 a.m., planting hundreds of flowers and shrubs. They also power-washed patios, the pool area and the playground.
"It's just nice to be part of company that does these types of things and gives back to the local community," says Mike Presti, of Commack.
Freeport Village Mayor Robert Kennedy hopes the Earth Day clean becomes an annual event.
