Brooklyn native brings enticing cone flavors to ice cream industry
Ice cream comes in just about every flavor imaginable, but one Brooklyn native is trying to bring the same array of choices to ice cream cones.
Kristine Tonkonow says she always though the cone could use a revamp, so she quit her hospitality job and started hand-rolling specialty cones at her parents' in Sheepshead Bay.
The Konery has expanded to 13 mouth-watering flavors, including red velvet, lavender butter, birthday cake and matcha green tea. All of them are now made on custom machinery at their Brooklyn Army Terminal facility.
The Konery's employees are grateful for what they are a part of. Giuseppe Maione once sold the cones at his ice cream stand before joining the team.
"I saw how enticed and excited everybody was when they got this beautiful cone," says Maione.
Tonkonow's cones can be found at more than 100 ice cream shops across the country. The company is preparing to expand, as they will soon move into a bigger facility across the street.
