Town of Hempstead moves to lower speed limit on 'dangerous' Elmont road
The Town of Hempstead has moved to lower the speed limit on what residents call a dangerous road in Elmont.
Just last week, residents called on lawmakers to lower the speed limit on the heavily trafficked Dutch Broadway in Elmont.
Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen says the town heard them loud and clear.
Board members voted unanimously to approved a plan to reduce the speed limit on Dutch Broadway from 30 to 20 mph between Elmont Road and Astor Street.
Gillen says they were prompted to take action after four teens were hit and injured on Halloween 2018, when a multivehicle crash sent a car careening onto the sidewalk. It was the latest in a string of accidents in which children were struck and injured on a busy stretch of road.
Gillen says she's asked Nassau police to step up enforcement in the area to remind drivers to slow down.
The state still has to approve the speed limit change before it can go into effect.
