Centerport opponents to proposed 7-Eleven: Not too convenient
Some people in Centerport are not thanking heaven for 7-Eleven.
A new 24-hour 7-Eleven convenience store is being proposed for the corner of Route 25A and Little Neck Road.
Tom Knight, co-president of the Centerport Harbor Civic Association, says the new store would exacerbate the already bad traffic flow in the area.
Knight says there have been numerous accidents at the site, and it would only get worse with the added traffic from the 7-Eleven. He adds that it would block access for emergency vehicles from the fire department.
With two lanes and no shoulders, Knight says there's no way to get around a traffic jam on that section of Route 25A.
Knight says there are also concerns about a catering facility expansion increasing traffic in the area.
The facility, Water's Edge, says it's dedicated to making sure the area remains peaceful and quiet, as well as ensuring safety.
Brian Rathgaber, who owns the former gas station where the 7-Eleven is proposed, says he has been unfairly kept from developing the property.
"I have been subjected to unfair zoning changes that in my opinion require unreasonable lot sizes - this occurred post application - also the Town's independent traffic study found no issues," he told News 12.
The Town of Huntington Zoning Board is waiting for an environmental impact study before moving forward.
The civic association will hold a meeting March 19 at the Harborfields Public Library.
